TANZANIA MAINLAND
Tanzania presents to the world the fossil evidence of the first human race on earth. In 1959 the remains of the Nutcracker man were discovered by Dr. Leakey in the Olduvai Gorge. In 1979 Mrs. Leakey discovered 3.6 million year old hominids footprints at Laetoli near the Olduvai Gorge.

In the 19th Century, three European explorers by the names of Dr. David Livingstone, Richard Burton, and Johann Ludwig Krapf paved the way for German colonization of Tanzania. After the second world war, the Germans were replaced by British who ruled the country until 1961 when independence was achieved. Tanzania has a marvelous wildlife heritage and some of the worlds most stunning landscape.

At an altitude of 5895 metres Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Ngorongoro Crater at 2286 metres above sea level is the largest unbroken Caldera in the world. It is a natural amphitheatre which is said to be one of the wonders of the world. Serengeti plains is undoubtedly the best known wildlife sanctuary in the world. Within its boundaries are more than 3 million large mammals. Zanzibar set like a jewel in the tranquil coral waters of the Indian Ocean is one of the world's most beautiful islands.

ZANZIBAR ISLAND
Zanzibar lies 6 degrees South of Equator. It is 73 km from Dar-es-Salaam on the Tanzanian coast and 219 km from Mombasa on the Kenyan Coast. It consists of Ugunja Island (also called Zanzibar) which is 86 km long and Pemba Island which is 68 km long. The maximum altitude is 119 metres (391 feet).
Zanzibar has a colourful ancient and modern history. The first visitors to enter Zanzibar were the Phoenicians about 600 BC. Among the later day visitors were the Portuguese who settled in Zanzibar in 15th Century. They were followed by Omani Arabs. One of the most colourful rulers of Omani Empire, Sultan Seyyid Said arrived in Zanzibar in 1828. He liked the Island so much that in 1840 he transferred the capital of the Empire from Muscat to Zanzibar. Omani Sultanate stranglehold of Zanzibar ended in 1890 when the British took over the Island. The British handed back power to the Omani Sultans in 1963 but in 1964 the Sultans were overthrown in a violent revolution by the local people.

A visitor to Zanzibar will certainly be humbled by the hospitality of the people. Zanzibaris regard hospitality to strangers as a sacred duty. The visitor will admire the historical legacy of the Greeks, Arabs, Persians, Portuguese, Indians, Chinese, British and Americans. Besides the crumbling ruins of these invaders, Zanzibar has excellent beaches, quality Snorkering, diving and big game fishing between her beautiful coral reef and the open sea.
