These
seafarers blazed the trail for the Dutch, French and British settlement.
The indigenous people particularly the Zulu led by their King Shaka the
Zulu who was born in 1787 strongly resisted the foreigners. The British
who ruled the country for over 70 years brought in the Indians in 1860
to work as labourers. In 1910 the blacks and Indians formed African National
Congress (ANC) to agitate for political representation. ANC spearheaded
this struggle until 1994 when democratic elections were held in which
Nelson Mandela was elected president.
