Egypt is synonymous with the Nile Valley civilization, which began more than 5,000 years ago. Over the ages, this civilization built an empire that stretched from Sudan in the South to Nile Delta on the Mediterranean Coast and beyond to Cyprus and Crete. The first Pharaonic Dynasty was established about 2920 B.C. For the next 2588 years Egypt witnessed the rise and fall of 31 dynasties which came to end in 331 B.C.

when Alexander the Great took over Egypt from the Persians. Alexander founded a new capital in the Greek style, which he named Alexandria after himself. He died 8 years later and his general Ptolemy made himself King Ptolemy I thereby establishing Ptolemaic Dynasty over Egypt. The Ptolemies ruled Egypt for the next 300 years until Octavian under the new name of Julius Caesar became the first Emperor of Rome. Cleopatra who like the other Ptolemies was a Macedonian Greek was the last of the Ptolemies. She was born in 69 BC and crowned the Queen of Egypt in 51 BC at the age of 18 years.
